Fuel reduction: grass, scrub and ground fuel need different work

Slashing, brushcutting and mulching reduce different fuels. What stays behind, what approvals apply and why maintenance still matters.

Fuel reduction is managing the amount and arrangement of combustible vegetation. It is not clearing everything to bare ground, and it is not a promise that a fire will stop at your fence. First identify the assets, access routes and vegetation that your notice or approved plan says must be managed.

Grass is not the same job as scrub

Slashing reduces the height of grass on suitable open ground. It leaves cut material unless removal is separately agreed, so the fuel has changed form rather than disappeared. Long cured grass beside sheds and access routes deserves attention, but protected native grassland still needs checking before disturbance.

Machine brushcutting can suit lighter woody regrowth up to around three inches thick where the attachment and access suit. Dense scrub and heavier woody growth may need forestry mulching. Mixing those patches into a grass-only booking can leave the most important work untouched.

Break up continuous and ladder fuels

Scrub below tree canopies can connect surface fuels with vegetation above. Selective clearing may reduce that connection while retaining marked trees and habitat, subject to approvals. A bushfire planner or the relevant authority determines any site-specific spacing or canopy requirements; a vegetation contractor should not invent them.

Prioritise the areas around the assets and routes identified in the approved plan rather than clearing a distant paddock because it is easiest to reach. Hazardous trees, powerline clearances and non-vegetation fire preparation require the appropriate specialists.

    Mulch is not mineral earth

Mulching processes vegetation in place. The mulch can dry and burn, so a tidy surface does not automatically meet a fuel requirement. If a notice calls for material removal or a bare-earth break, discuss how that requirement will be met before choosing mulching. We do vegetation work, not general grading or earthworks.

Firebreaks and defendable space have different purposes and may have different finish requirements. Use the actual documents, not a standard distance from another property.

Check permissions and the working day

Fuel reduction does not cancel native vegetation controls, waterway approvals or road-reserve permissions. Check the proposed footprint with council and provide any endorsed plan. Confirm current CFA activity restrictions and the forecast before machinery runs; equipment compliance alone does not make a hot, windy day safe.

    Keep the reduction working

Inspect after regrowth, significant rain and new fallen material, and before the conditions your notice requires must be maintained. Photograph repeat points and arrange the next cut from the actual growth, not an assumed annual visit. Weed follow-up may need a separate adviser or spraying contractor; Ironbark offers mechanical vegetation work now, with commercial weed spraying starting once our Commercial Operator Licence (COL) is in hand.
