Easement and corridor clearing: scope, timing and asset protection

What vegetation clearing along operational corridors involves, why access and clearances matter, and how to plan work with the asset owner.

Easement and corridor clearing manages vegetation within an authorised work area around infrastructure or along an access route. The purpose may be inspection access, maintenance access or clearances specified by the asset owner. A corridor on a map does not give a contractor permission to enter or work near live infrastructure.

    What the vegetation work involves

The scope can include slashing suitable grass, brushcutting lighter regrowth, mulching approved woody vegetation and reopening agreed access or fence lines. Select the method for the vegetation and surrounding assets. Vegetation clearing is separate from servicing infrastructure, constructing tracks or carrying out civil works.

Work boundaries, retained vegetation, exclusion zones and material handling must be defined. Roads, rail, power, water and other utility sites have different access and operating requirements; one set of clearances cannot be applied to every corridor.

    When clearing is needed

An asset owner may identify vegetation affecting maintenance access, visibility, an inspection route or a specified clearance. Work may be scheduled before an asset inspection, maintenance shutdown or routine site visit. The asset owner determines the required clearance and authorises the work, rather than the contractor inferring it from visible vegetation.

On operational sites, clearing may need to proceed in stages. Agree which areas can be released for work, what operations must continue and who can stop or approve the next stage. If work needs an outage, possession or traffic control, confirm those arrangements before committing machinery.

    Why asset information comes first

Visible poles, markers and fences do not identify every service or its safe working limits. Obtain current asset information, site instructions and the responsible contact. A Before You Dig enquiry is one part of preparation; it does not authorise excavation or prove that private services are absent.

Do not enter live-asset exclusion zones or assume vegetation can be mulched against pipes, cables, signs or structures. Required locating, isolations, permits to work, supervision and specialist work must be arranged with the asset owner. If the safe scope is not established, the affected work does not proceed.

How to choose the work window

Coordinate with site operations, inductions, public access arrangements, approved traffic controls and any asset-owner attendance. Safe machinery access, habitat conditions and current fire restrictions also affect timing. Ironbark does not work on Total Fire Ban days.

An inspection deadline does not override planning controls or site safety. Check approvals early enough to organise work without assuming a routine maintenance description exempts every vegetation removal. Use the permit screening page to identify matters to confirm with the relevant authorities.

    What to agree before mobilisation

Provide an approved work map, clearance requirements, known services, access points, exclusions and a nominated site contact. Allocate responsibility for inductions, specialist supervision, operational controls and handling any non-vegetation material. Agree how concealed hazards and changed instructions will be managed.

The machinery is selected for the authorised task and safe access. An available attachment does not replace an asset-owner approval or make work close to live services acceptable.

    Handover and repeat maintenance

Review the completed footprint, access condition, retained vegetation, exclusions and any unfinished areas. Record outstanding work and why it was not completed. A clearing visit is not certification of asset compliance unless that separate assessment has been arranged with the responsible party.

Inspect regrowth against the asset owner's requirements and plan maintenance from actual conditions. Easement & Corridor Clearing covers the vegetation scope; asset maintenance and general earthworks remain separate.
