How It Works
What affects the cost of a forestry mulching or land-clearing job
Two properties the same size can be very different jobs. Density, stem size, ground, access and the finish you want all change the work involved.
There's no honest per-acre price for mulching or land clearing that works across every property. The size on a map tells you very little about how long the machine will be working. That's why we don't price these jobs over the phone. We look at the land first, then put the scope and price in writing.
Density matters more than area
A paddock with scattered wattle regrowth and a creek line choked with mature blackberry can be the same size and still be completely different jobs. Thick growth means more passes and slower going. Photos from inside the growth, not just from the gate, show far more than a drive-by does.
What's growing, and how thick the stems are
Grass, light scrub, woody regrowth and standing saplings each need different gear. Light growth might suit machine brushcutting or acreage slashing. Thicker woody material is forestry mulching work. Larger timber takes longer to process, and some trees need separate advice from a qualified arborist.
Weeds like blackberry and gorse can grow into dense thickets that are slow to work through, and they need follow-up control after the first clearing.
Ground, slope and hidden obstacles
Slope, rocks, wet ground, old wire, buried rubbish and stumps all slow the work down and can limit where a machine can safely go. Tell the contractor about anything you know is hidden in the growth. Unknown hazards found on the day can change the plan.
Access to the work area
Gate width, soft ground, creek crossings and how far the machine has to travel within the property all affect the job. If access is tight or the ground is only workable in certain conditions, mention it before the site visit. Our machinery access guide covers what to check.
The finish you want
Knocking scrub down to open up access is a different job from processing everything thoroughly across the whole area. Below-ground work on roots and stumps is a separate subsoil mulching scope. Be clear about the end use: grazing, fire preparation, access or getting land ready for maintenance.
Approvals and restrictions
Native vegetation controls, planning overlays, waterways and fire restrictions can change what can be done and when. Checking them before booking avoids a delayed or reduced job. Start with the Victorian land-clearing guide.
Travel
Ironbark is Bendigo based and set up for larger properties and acreage across Central Victoria. Suitable larger jobs further away are considered, with travel factored into the quote.
